Tama Takahashi opens her solo show of washi-paper collages on Kyoto-made 24-karat gold screens at Gallery 825, in the gallery from noon to 4 PM.
Santa Barbara artist Tama Takahashi brings her solo show The Land and Sea in 24-Karat Gold to Gallery 825, the nonprofit exhibition arm of the Los Angeles Art Association. She collages Japanese washi paper with watercolor or oil paint onto 24-karat gold screens custom made in Kyoto. The centerpiece is a 6-foot, four-panel folding screen of the Santa Barbara waterline. The show also includes eight small studies of marine creatures on alloy gold foil and seven single-panel screens on 24-karat gold leaf. Third-generation master craftsman Osamu Iohara built the screens by hand from bamboo, washi paper, silk brocade and gold leaf. Opening day is part of an all-gallery opening at Gallery 825, and Takahashi will be in the gallery from noon to 4 PM. The show is on view through November 20. Gallery 825 is open by appointment through laaa.org, with parking in the rear or on the street. See more of Takahashi's work at tamatakahashi.com.
