Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 22, 2026
LA Today ("LA Today," "we," "us," or "our") publishes traveltodayla.com (the "Site"): a digital guide to events, food, places, and hidden corners of Los Angeles. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit the Site or subscribe to our newsletter, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. By using the Site, you agree to this policy.
We wrote this to be readable. If anything is unclear, email us at info@traveltodayla.com and we'll explain it in plain language.
The short version
We collect very little. We ask for your email only when you choose to subscribe, and for your name, email, and (optionally) phone number only when you write to us. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone. We use privacy-respecting tools where we can. You can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information at any time.
Information we collect
Information you give us directly.
- Newsletter signup. When you subscribe, we collect your email address. That's it.
- Contact form. When you use our contact form, we collect your name, email address, your message, and — only if you choose to provide it — your phone number. A phone number is optional and is used solely to respond to your specific inquiry. We do not add it to any marketing list and we do not send promotional texts. (See "SMS and mobile information" below.)
- Event or tip submissions. If you submit an event or send us a tip, we collect what you include in that submission.
Information collected automatically when you visit.
Like most websites, our Site and its hosting and analytics providers automatically receive standard technical information when you load a page, including your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring page, the pages you view, and the date and time of your visit. This information helps us keep the Site secure, understand which content is useful, and improve it. Where required, this is governed by the cookie section below.
Information we do not collect. We do not ask for or store payment card numbers, government IDs, or sensitive personal data on this Site.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use them, and permit a limited set of trusted providers to use them, to:
- keep the Site functioning and secure;
- remember basic preferences; and
- measure aggregate, anonymized traffic (which pages are read, how visitors arrive) so we can improve the Site.
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings; most browsers let you refuse or remove them. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the Site work. We honor "Do Not Track" and Global Privacy Control browser signals where technically supported.
Third-party services we rely on
We build the Site with a small number of reputable providers. Each receives only the information it needs to do its job:
- Hosting: Netlify hosts the Site and processes standard server logs (including IP addresses) to serve pages and protect against abuse.
- Weather: the date-and-weather display uses Open-Meteo, a privacy-respecting weather API. It receives a fixed Los Angeles location, not your location, and no personal data.
- Maps: Mapbox powers location and map features. When a map loads, Mapbox may receive standard technical request data.
- Events: event listings are sourced from public event providers, including Ticketmaster and Eventbrite. This is event data we display to you; browsing our event pages does not send your personal information to those providers.
- Newsletter: signups for The LA Today Newsletter are collected directly through our own Site's subscription form (processed by our hosting provider, Netlify) and are stored solely to deliver the newsletter. We do not use a third-party email-marketing platform, and we do not sell or share your email.
- Analytics: we use Google Analytics to measure aggregate Site traffic. We configure it for privacy and do not use it to identify you personally. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy; you can opt out across sites using Google's browser add-on.
- Contact form: form submissions are processed by our hosting provider's form service (Netlify) to deliver your message to us.
These providers process data under their own privacy policies and, where applicable, as our data processors.
How we use your information
We use the information described above to:
- personalize and improve the Site — understanding, in aggregate, how readers use LA Today so we can make it better;
- send the newsletter you asked for, and only that, until you unsubscribe;
- respond to you — answering inquiries, questions, corrections, event submissions, and other requests you send us;
- run the occasional promotion, contest, or survey you choose to enter, and send information on topics you've agreed to hear about; and
- keep the Site secure and working — detecting abuse, debugging, and maintaining performance.
We do not use your information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
How we share information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share information only in these limited ways:
- With the service providers listed above, solely so they can perform their function for us.
- In aggregate, anonymized form — for example, general audience and traffic statistics that are not linked to any individual — which we may share with advertising or business partners.
- When required by law — to comply with a valid legal process, protect our rights, or protect the safety of others.
- In a business transfer — if LA Today is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may transfer as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.
SMS and mobile information
If you provide a phone number through our contact form, it is used only to respond to your inquiry. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes, and we do not send you promotional or automated marketing texts. If we ever offer an SMS program in the future, it will have its own clear, opt-in signup — never bundled into a contact form.
How we protect your information
We use appropriate collection, storage, and processing practices and reasonable security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction of your information. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, so while we work to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data retention
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected: newsletter emails until you unsubscribe; contact-form messages for as long as needed to handle and record your inquiry; and technical logs for a limited period for security and diagnostics. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see "Your rights").
Your rights and choices
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any email.
- Access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing info@traveltodayla.com. We'll respond within a reasonable time.
- Opt out of tracking through your browser's cookie controls and Do Not Track / Global Privacy Control signals.
California residents. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA), you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion or correction, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined by California law. You will never be discriminated against for exercising these rights. To make a request, email info@traveltodayla.com.
Users outside the United States. LA Today is based in the United States and intended for a U.S. audience. If you access the Site from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the United States. Where the GDPR or similar laws apply to you, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, and to object to certain processing; contact us to exercise them.
Children's privacy
Protecting the privacy of the very young matters to us. We do not knowingly collect or maintain information from anyone we actually know to be under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other sites
The Site links to venues, events, and other websites we don't control. This policy does not apply to those sites, and we're not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Review the privacy policy of any site you visit.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above, and significant changes will be reflected on this page. Your continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
