The Cinerama Dome Is Coming Back, Revived by Sony's Alamo Drafthouse

One of Hollywood's most beloved landmarks is finally coming back. Sony Pictures Entertainment, through the Alamo Drafthouse chain it acquired in 2024, announced on July 22, 2026 that it will revive the Cinerama Dome and the adjacent former ArcLight Hollywood, which have sat empty since Pacific Theatres closed the complex in April 2021. Restoration is set to begin in August 2026, with a reopening targeted for early 2028.

To clear up persistent confusion: this is a Sony project, not Netflix, which operates the separate Egyptian Theatre nearby. Under the plan, the geodesic Dome, opened in 1963 and famous for its 86-foot curved screen, is being restored as a purist, single-screen cinema with 70mm projection and no food service, while the neighboring 14-screen multiplex reopens with premium formats including 35mm, 70mm and 4K laser, plus dine-in service, event spaces and karaoke rooms. The deal is structured as a long-term operating arrangement rather than a property purchase.
